SUMMARY:General Meeting: The Saddest Stories in the World - Yizkor Books and How to Use Them in Genealogy
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Steven Brock \nDoors open at 7:30 pm \nLocation: Shaarei Shomayim Congregation (see map below) \nVenue: Sisterhood Hall \nJewish history is filled with terrifying stories of oppression\, persecution and mistreatment. Over the centuries\, Jews have been subjected to libel\, discrimination\, pogroms\, expulsions\, and\, in the worst cases\, mass murder. In order to remember bygone communities and individuals\, Jews have always kept records of these tragedies in Memorial or Yizkor books. Following the Holocaust\, hundreds of Yizkor books were written and published to memorialize the thousands of European Jewish communities destroyed by the Nazis. \nJoin Steven Brock as he recounts the origins of Yizkor books\, where to find and how to understand them\, and how to use them to research your ancestral homes and the lost members of your family tree. \nSteven Brock has been researching his family roots in Poland and Russia for over 20 years and has traced his ancestors back to the late 1700s. He was a member of the Montreal JGS until he moved with his family to Oakville in 1999. He has been a member of the Hamilton Jewish Genealogical Society since its inception in 2004\, where he serves as Treasurer. In addition to his own research\, he has been involved in several projects including the Jewish Records Indexing – Poland\, The Canadian Naturalization Database Indexing\, and the JewishGen Online Worldwide Burial Registry. \nClick here for a more complete outline of Steven’s lecture: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1dUC26FUeSbOONhOAQ5pZ3pDKuhCJBElS/view?usp=sharing \n  \nMembers: Free Guests: $5\ninfo@jgstoronto.ca www.jgstoronto.ca Tel: 647-247-6414

SUMMARY:DNA - Special Interest Group - Meeting Cancelled
DESCRIPTION:The first meeting of the Fall for the DNA SIG  at the Family History Centre  scheduled on Oct. 11 has been cancelled.  The first meeting will take place November 8th. \nEric is planning to do a follow-up of Henry Wellisch’s DNA testing results (his Y-chromosome and mitochondrial haplogroups\, and his AncestryDNA results vs. FamilyTreeDNA)\, and a recap of the Genetic Genealogy Foundations series to refresh memories and answer new questions.\n\nAlso\, instead of just going through that Foundations series again\, I thought it’d be fun and timely to start a new series where we explore genetic genealogy’s legal\, privacy\, and related issues. I’ve done a lot of research and thinking about this\, but don’t have any definitive conclusions because so much depends on personal priorities and feelings. So I’ll share what I’ve learned and we can discuss.

SUMMARY:Ashkenaz Festival - Celebrating Jewish Food
DESCRIPTION:Ashkenaz Festival celebrates Jewish food with free events at HarbourFront Centre and unique dining experiences across Toronto. \nFrom a Bagel Battle to an Immersive Global Shtetl\, \nThis Year’s Festival Has Something for Every Taste!\nAugust 15\, 2018. – Toronto\, Ontario – This year’s Ashkenaz Festival returns with a robust program  spotlighting Jewish food and Jewish culinary culture. From herring\, bagels and Montreal smoked meat sandwiches\, to more exotic and unexpected fare from northern Italy and the Sephardic diaspora\, Ashkenaz will offer a feast for both the mind and taste buds. Matching its diverse and eclectic programming in music\, theatre\, film\, dance\, visual arts and literature\, Ashkenaz 2018’s food programming is an integral part of this world-renowned celebration of global Jewish performing arts and multiculturalism. \nThe 2018 Festival’s overall thematic focus on women in Jewish music and culture is well-represented in its food offerings\, with an impressive slate of female restaurateurs\, food historians and food writers. Over the course of the Labour Day weekend\, guests will be treated to a variety of free events all taking place at Miss Lou’s Room at Harbourfront Centre. Learn about the unique foodways of Soviet/Russian Jews with Lea Zeltserman\, taste 3 different varieties of pickled herring with Miriam Borden\, learn how to make Sephardic desserts with Kat Romanow\, pick up culinary tips and wisdom from Judy Perly of the Free Times Café\, or participate in a Bagel Battle pitting Toronto\, Montreal and NY bagels against each other in a taste-off decided by both audience preference and a celebrity panel. Who will be crowned the Bagel Boss? \nWhile much of the Ashkenaz Festival takes place at Harbourfront Centre\, its food program extends across the GTA this year for the first time\, with a new program spotlighting Toronto’s reputation as a global music city and cosmopolitan hub where tourists can sample the cultures and foods of diverse communities from around the world. Ashkenaz’s new tourist-oriented experience\, Global Shtetl (Global Village)\, is a series of curated excursions in which participants will enjoy a special meal in one of Toronto’s many unique neighbourhoods\, sampling the cuisine of a particular ethno-cultural community whose music or culture will be highlighted within the Festival’s programming. During the meal\, participants will be immersed in the sounds\, tastes and stories of places around the world through lectures\, talks and performances. The five excursions will take place between August 29th and September 2nd and tickets are sold both as a package and individually. \nGlobal Shtetlers will experience “A Taste of Poland in Little Portugal\,” with an evening of Polish-Jewish music and food at Lula Lounge (August 29). The following night\, Ashkenaz serves up Montreal smoked meat sandwiches alongside its all-Canadian concert tribute to Leonard Cohen at the Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts (August 30). Friday night of the Festival (August 31) brings a sumptuous and eclectic\, multi-course Shabbat evening meal\, paired with a jazz-inflected set of music from the virtuosic Sela-Rosenblatt Quartet\, based on the traditional sabbath service\, “Mizmor Shir.” \nThe likely favourite for top highlight of the Global Shtetl program will be a unique Italian-Jewish lunch event on Saturday September 1 at Toronto’s newest European food hotspot\, Drom Taberna in the Queen West neighbourhood. “Il Profumo Delle Case Buone (The Aroma of Things Good)” will feature a heartfelt performance by Italian singer\, musician and playwright Enrico Fink\, inspired by the flavors of old family recipes in the cookbook of Jenny Bassani\, whose famous family features in Giorgio Bassani’s historical novel (and later feature film) “The Garden of the Finzi Continis.”Enrico Fink’s unique storytelling and music\, painting a picture of Italian Jewish life in the city of Ferrara before WWII\, provides the perfect appetizer before this delicious\, authentic meal from northern Italy. Be prepared to stimulate all your senses! \nGlobal Shtetl wraps up September 2 with a Sunday morning walking tour of Kensington Market\, (Toronto’s original Jewish neighbourhood)\, followed by the “Bella\, Did Ya Eat?” Jewish brunch at Free Times Café. With live music by Russian klezmer superstars Dobranotch\, and over 40 food items on the buffet (blintzes\, latkes\, gefilte fish\, smoked fish\, eggs & onions\, chalah french toast\, salads galore\, and much more)\, this will be the perfect heymishe(downhome) wrap to the Global Shtetl series. \nFor Global Shtetl ticket information\, and to book your excursion\, please visit http://www.ashkenaz.ca/global-shtetl/  or contact bridget@ashkenaz.ca. Full Ashkenaz Festival food program listings are viewable here http://www.ashkenaz.ca/2018-festival/food-2018/ \nAbout Ashkenaz Festival \nThe Ashkenaz Festival is one of the largest and most prestigious showcases of Jewish music and culture anywhere in the world. Since 1995\, the festival has taken place biennially at Harbourfront Centre\, Toronto’s premier venue for the presentation of world and folk culture and for the meeting of diverse communities through the arts. Originally founded as a showcase for Klezmer and Yiddish music and culture\, the Ashkenaz Festival has evolved over the years into an eclectic showcase of global Jewish art and culture\, encompassing not merely the traditions of Eastern Europe\, but also Sephardic\, Mizrachi\, and Israeli culture\, and all manner of cross-cultural fusion. The Festival is offered 90% free to the public and attracts a multicultural audience of over 60\,000 people to 80+ events featuring 250+ individual artists\, from across Canada and around the world.

SUMMARY:The Ward Cabaret June 20 to June 22
DESCRIPTION:The Ward Cabaret reimagines the vibrant sound of Toronto’s first multi-cultural neighbourhood. JUNO Award-winning musician and composer David Buchbinder is joined by a collaborative team of musicians\, singers\, and actors for a musical event based on the songs and sounds of Toronto’s first cross-cultural community. \nHistory is a verb. The passage of time is a constant. But what we seek to preserve from our past and what we choose to cast away has always been a selective process often informed by unexamined motives and biases. \n— MICHAEL MCCLELLAND\, THE WARD (CO-EDITOR)\n\nThe Ward was a Lower East Side-like enclave shared for over a century by Irish\, African-Canadians\, Italians\, Eastern European Jews and Chinese. A dense corner of the city that officials saw as a crime-ridden slum in need of reform\, The Ward was home to waves of immigrants who settled there\, started businesses and religious institutions\, learned English\, hawked newspapers\, ran speakeasies\, restaurants and laundries\, started theatres\, and generally tried to fit in. When these newcomers came to Toronto\, they left much behind\, but brought with them great cultural treasures: stories\, songs\, music and traditions. \nInspired by The Ward (Coach House Books)\, Buchbinder first gathered a group of stellar Toronto artists to create The Ward Cabaret in 2016. After selling out at Soulpepper and Lula Lounge\, the book’s editors\, along with Buchbinder\, Marjorie Chan\, Andrew Craig\, and Michael Occhipinti – three musicians and a playwright representing four of the five cultures of The Ward – are reimagining the songs\, music and stories of The Ward in order to explore the cultural roots of what has become the most diverse city on the planet.\n  \nhttps://luminatofestival.com/2018/Events/The-Ward-Cabaret

SUMMARY:Brick Walls and Breakthroughs
DESCRIPTION:BRICK WALLS AND BREAKTHROUGHS \nShaarei Shomayim\, 470 Glencairn Avenue\, Toronto \nWednesday\, June 13th\, 2018 at 8:00 p.m. \nDoors open at 7:30 pm \n  \nThe Jewish Genealogical Society of Toronto offers the much anticipated Brick Walls and Breakthroughs for 2018! \n  \nLes Kelman (originally Kelmansky) knew about his grandfather (born 1870 in Ukraine – died Glasgow 1945).  He even had a “name” for his great-grandfather.  But that was the end of the road.  Then he obtained the 1858 Revision List for Pogrebishche\, Ukraine\, with lots of Kelmanskys\, but still no way of filling the gap between 1858 and 1870.  Les will share how he discovered a link that enabled his research to go back in time to 1775. \nLes has been an active member of JGS Toronto since the early 1990s and served as President of our Society (2013-2016) and as the Programme Committee Chair for many years. \nMerle Langbord Levine’s grandparents were influential in her upbringing and encouraged her desire to go after her roots and heritage.  Google and My Heritage autosomal DNA testing results led her to a distant cousin living in Florida.  Merle was able to trace her family back to the mid-1700s and obtain new information as to where the family lived in Poland.  She also discovered what happened to the family during the Holocaust\, providing details never disclosed to her Langbord grandparents. \nMerle has presented at JGS Toronto on several occasions.  She is a professional educator who is in private practice tutoring students. \nNeil Richler’s presentation is entitled “Using Family and Online Resources to Track a Distant Branch of Long Lost Family”. Neil’s success came about as a result of an interview with his great-grandfather and by using current online genealogical resources. \nNeil has been a Society member since 1992 when he began his family research.  He has presented various workshops for JGS Toronto and has served as a JGS Board member for over twenty years serving as the long-time Membership Coordinator.

SUMMARY:A Forgotten Land: Growing Up in the Jewish Pale
DESCRIPTION:A Forgotten Land: Growing up in the Jewish Pale\nSpeaker: Lisa Cooper \nShaarei Shomayim\, 470 Glencairn Avenue\, Toronto\nThursday\, May 17\, 2018 at 8:00 pm\nDoors open at 7:30 pm \nLisa Cooper will talk about shtetl life in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in a presentation relevant in particular to those with Ukrainian or Lithuanian ancestry\, but also to those whose relatives came from Poland or elsewhere in Eastern Europe. She will discuss the major historical events that affected the Jewish community at that time: pogroms\, World War I\, the Russian Revolution\, Civil War and famine\, and\, of course\, emigration to Canada. She will also discuss the lengths that many people went to in order to ensure their family survived those terrible times.\nLisa’s book\, A Forgotten Land: Growing up in the Jewish Pale\, is based on recorded conversations Lisa’s father had with his mother Pearl about her early life in the Russian Empire. So many Jewish immigrants refused to talk about the ‘old country’\, choosing to forget the unhappy times\, not to pass on their memories. Lisa is fortunate that her grandmother was a great storyteller. Her father\, who grew up in Canada surrounded by these tales of shtetl life\, later made recordings of these stories in the 1970s\, before Pearl died. Lisa asked her father to translate the recordings (from the Yiddish) before he himself passed away\, and turned them into a book so that we\, today\, can better understand how our ancestors lived – and how so many of them died.\nLisa Cooper is a British journalist\, writer and artist visiting Toronto for a family celebration. She studied Russian at Edinburgh University\, attracted by a passion for languages and a fascination with the country’s people and history. As a student\, she spent a year in the southern Russian city of Voronezh during another of the country’s momentous turning points – the dismantling of the Soviet Union. Armed with an old address dating from the 1960s and a family tree\, she made contact with cousins in Kiev\, who introduced her to a web of relatives she knew nothing about. The experience helped breed an interest in both family history and Ukrainian Jewish history. See Lisa Cooperfor more information.\nMembers: Free Guests: $5\ninfo@jgstoronto.ca www.jgstoronto.ca Tel: 647-247-6414\ntwitter: jgsoftoronto facebook: Jewish Genealogical Society of Toronto
