SUMMARY:A Forgotten Land: Growing Up in the Jewish Pale
DESCRIPTION:A Forgotten Land: Growing up in the Jewish Pale\nSpeaker: Lisa Cooper \nShaarei Shomayim\, 470 Glencairn Avenue\, Toronto\nThursday\, May 17\, 2018 at 8:00 pm\nDoors open at 7:30 pm \nLisa Cooper will talk about shtetl life in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in a presentation relevant in particular to those with Ukrainian or Lithuanian ancestry\, but also to those whose relatives came from Poland or elsewhere in Eastern Europe. She will discuss the major historical events that affected the Jewish community at that time: pogroms\, World War I\, the Russian Revolution\, Civil War and famine\, and\, of course\, emigration to Canada. She will also discuss the lengths that many people went to in order to ensure their family survived those terrible times.\nLisa’s book\, A Forgotten Land: Growing up in the Jewish Pale\, is based on recorded conversations Lisa’s father had with his mother Pearl about her early life in the Russian Empire. So many Jewish immigrants refused to talk about the ‘old country’\, choosing to forget the unhappy times\, not to pass on their memories. Lisa is fortunate that her grandmother was a great storyteller. Her father\, who grew up in Canada surrounded by these tales of shtetl life\, later made recordings of these stories in the 1970s\, before Pearl died. Lisa asked her father to translate the recordings (from the Yiddish) before he himself passed away\, and turned them into a book so that we\, today\, can better understand how our ancestors lived – and how so many of them died.\nLisa Cooper is a British journalist\, writer and artist visiting Toronto for a family celebration. She studied Russian at Edinburgh University\, attracted by a passion for languages and a fascination with the country’s people and history. As a student\, she spent a year in the southern Russian city of Voronezh during another of the country’s momentous turning points – the dismantling of the Soviet Union. Armed with an old address dating from the 1960s and a family tree\, she made contact with cousins in Kiev\, who introduced her to a web of relatives she knew nothing about. The experience helped breed an interest in both family history and Ukrainian Jewish history. See Lisa Cooperfor more information.\nMembers: Free Guests: $5\ninfo@jgstoronto.ca www.jgstoronto.ca Tel: 647-247-6414\ntwitter: jgsoftoronto facebook: Jewish Genealogical Society of Toronto

SUMMARY:Documenting Holocaust Survival and Creating a Legacy for Future Generations
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Jerry Scherer\nDoors Open at 7:30pm\nNote: This Event will be held at Shaarei Shomayim Congregation\, 470 Glencairn Ave.\n \n Sisterhood Hall \nJerry Scherer\, son of Holocaust survivors\, was born in Siberia in 1945. After the war\, he and his parents spent 3 years in a Displaced Persons camp in Germany before emigrating to Montreal in 1949. Jerry received degrees from McGill and the University of Toronto. He taught high school mathematics for 42 years\, first for the Toronto Board of Education and then at Community Hebrew Academy of Toronto. He retired in 2009. Jerry currently volunteers for the Jewish Genealogical Society of Toronto as the Coordinator of the Memorial Plaques Project. Jerry enjoys spending time with his children and grandchildren\, cheering on the Jays\, Raptors and his granddaughter’s hockey team\, and travelling with his wife.\nTitle\nCreating A Legacy for Future Generations: Discovering the story of Holocaust survivors\nOverview\nJerry created a book for his children and grandchildren that details his parents’ experiences during the war and their stay in the Hofgeismar DP camp in Germany. His parents rarely spoke of the horrors they endured or witnessed. As a result\, Jerry had to be resourceful to piece their history together. Jerry will share how over the course of many years\, he was able to learn his parents’ story from a few family pictures\, online research and conversations with people from around the world. Jerry hopes that by sharing his story\, others will use his techniques to research their family’s history\, so that they too can provide a legacy for future generations. \nOur monthly genealogy presentations are open to all and all are welcome\, although we request non-members to contribute $5.00 towards our costs. We hope that you will enjoy the session and we invite you to join our Society. The $5.00 guest fee would be counted towards the annual membership fee of $40.00. We would welcome you as a member\, as there are member benefits including parts of our web site that are only available to members.

SUMMARY:Finding Holocaust Victims and Survivors - JGST sponsored event
DESCRIPTION:Henry Wellisch President Emeritus\nDoors open at 7:30pm \nHOW TO FIND VICTIMS AND SURVIVORS OF THE HOLOCAUST \nIt has been said that the Holocaust has been more researched than any other event in modern times. However\, the innumerable books\, articles\, films\, etc.\, have mainly focused on events and not so much on individuals. Research to identify victims and survivors is a specific undertaking \, and fortunately over the last several years more resources to find them have come to light\, and more institutions have made their holdings accessible to the public on line.\nHenry’s presentation will focus on some of the major resources\, such as Yad Vashem in Jerusalem\, the US Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington and the International Tracing Service (ITS) in Bad Arolsen\, Germany.\nThese and other institutions have now installed search engines and can also be contacted via email. Other important resources such as the Jewishgen website\, Yizkor books\, various memorial sites such as Auschwitz\, Dachau and Buchenwald with their archives will also be discussed.\nOur Speaker\, Henry Wellisch turned 95 on Sept. 22nd. Henry led a complex and interesting life. He is a Holocaust survivor himself. If you wish to honour Henry on the occasion of this special birthday you may make a donation in his name by going to Honouring Henry Wellisch
