SUMMARY:Finding Holocaust Victims and Survivors - JGST sponsored event
DESCRIPTION:Henry Wellisch President Emeritus\nDoors open at 7:30pm \nHOW TO FIND VICTIMS AND SURVIVORS OF THE HOLOCAUST \nIt has been said that the Holocaust has been more researched than any other event in modern times. However\, the innumerable books\, articles\, films\, etc.\, have mainly focused on events and not so much on individuals. Research to identify victims and survivors is a specific undertaking \, and fortunately over the last several years more resources to find them have come to light\, and more institutions have made their holdings accessible to the public on line.\nHenry’s presentation will focus on some of the major resources\, such as Yad Vashem in Jerusalem\, the US Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington and the International Tracing Service (ITS) in Bad Arolsen\, Germany.\nThese and other institutions have now installed search engines and can also be contacted via email. Other important resources such as the Jewishgen website\, Yizkor books\, various memorial sites such as Auschwitz\, Dachau and Buchenwald with their archives will also be discussed.\nOur Speaker\, Henry Wellisch turned 95 on Sept. 22nd. Henry led a complex and interesting life. He is a Holocaust survivor himself. If you wish to honour Henry on the occasion of this special birthday you may make a donation in his name by going to Honouring Henry Wellisch

SUMMARY:The Jewish Oil Magnates of Galicia
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Valerie Schatzker\nTemple Sinai: 210 Wilson Ave. Toronto\, ON\nTime: 8:00 pm\nDoors Open: 7:30 pm \nThe near-annihilation of Europe’s Jews in the Second World War destroyed not only much of their history\, but also knowledge of the contributions they made to the regions in which they lived. In The Jewish Oil Magnates of Galicia\, Valerie Schatzker rescues the almost-forgotten story of the Jews who became the “wildcatters” and oil barons in one of the world’s first petroleum industries. \nCombining a history of Galicia’s petroleum industry with an annotated English translation of Julien Hirszhaut’s Yiddish novel Di yiddishe naftmagnatn (The Jewish Oil Magnates)\, Schatzker traces the near-century-long boom and bust cycle that took place in the Austro-Hungarian province – from the perilous\, back-breaking work of digging for oil by hand\, to the introduction of the Canadian drill that increased production. Galician Jews worked in the industry from its beginning to its final days under German occupation. They were pioneers in exploration\, refining\, and marketing\, and in the first part of the twentieth century were prominent among its technical\, scientific\, and managerial leaders. After the First World War\, as borders shifted and minorities clashed\, oil resources declined. During the Second World War\, Nazi occupiers\, using Jewish slave labourers\, squeezed out the last barrels for their war effort.
